As every year, more than 500 law students will soon try to land an internship in a large law firm for the year 2023 or 2024.

The first step for students will be to submit application packages electronically through the ViRecruit portal. The portal will be open from Friday February 4 at 9 a.m. until Tuesday February 8 at noon.

This year, three firms withdrew from the race compared to last year. They are Beauvais Truchon, Gagné Letarte and Stein Monast.

Due to the current pandemic situation, the Course aux stages 2022 will once again take place entirely virtually. The relevant law schools were notified on January 12.

“We know it’s been another difficult year, but given the success of the virtual interviews in the last two editions of the Course aux stages, we hope that the students and participating firms will have an equally positive experience. this year,” wrote us Ship Nanci K., responsible for administering the recruiting agreement.

Then, students will receive calls to schedule the first selection interviews from February 21 to 25. Interviews will take place from Monday March 14 at 8 a.m. to Friday March 18 at 8 p.m. and from Monday March 21 to Thursday March 24 at 6 p.m.

“As a firm, we are grateful to have had the opportunity to meet many students in person at small events over the fall and look forward to reconnecting with them virtually over the coming weeks,” added Head of Legal Talent and Culture at Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg.

According to the recruitment agreement, firms will only be able to submit their internship offers from Friday, March 25 at 9 a.m.

Special recruitment

Some firms have already participated in the “special recruitment” which took place between August 17 and November 3, 2021.

This recruitment concerns students who participated in the recruitment for internships in firms outside Quebec in the fall or those who are doing a semester abroad during the regular internship race.

They are Bereskin & Parr, Blake Cassels & Graydon, Borden Ladner Gervais, Clyde & Co, Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg, Dentons Canada, Dla Piper, Fasken Martineau Dumoulin, Lavery, McCarthy Tétrault, Norton Rose Fulbright, Osler Hoskin & Harcourt, Robinson Sheppard Shapiro, Smart & Biggar, Stikeman Elliott, Torys and Woods and Yves Ménard Avocats.

Intellectual Property Recruitment

Like last year, the firms BCF, Bereskin & Parr, Fasken Martineau Dumoulin, Gowling WLG, Norton Rose Fulbright, and Smart & Biggar want to hire students as technical advisers or patent agents in training during the summer periods within of their intellectual property departments or practice groups.

Candidates must have already obtained a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree in pure or applied sciences before beginning studies in law.

Firms will be able to hire them from the summer following the first year of their law studies. Remember that students will not be able to start working before the end of the winter semester of their law program, nor continue to work after the start of the fall semester.
