Hauts de France. Three-week low-altitude flights to study air pollution

A scientific program will begin in the sky of Hauts-de-France on Wednesday June 15 or Thursday June 16, 2022. For three weeks, a plane will fly over the region several times at low altitude. The ATR-72 should indeed be rated at only 300 m above the ground, specifies France Blue. The objective of the specialists is to learn more about air pollution.

For this, the eight scientists on board will study the nature of the gases and particles collected during the flight by the multiple sensors fitted to the device. 2.5 tonnes of equipment and measuring devices will also be on board. Emphasis will be placed on the analysis of the samples concerning the materials emitted by the Ile-de-France pollution which then move and mix with others, explains the radio station.

Three or four flights of 3.5 hours each are planned in Picardy. The precise program will depend on the weather and climatic conditions of the moment, announce our colleagues. In the region, the plane should not fly over the biggest cities like Amiens (Somme) but focus on rural areas.

The study was commissioned by the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), Météo France and the National Center for Space Studies (Cnes), details the local media. She was appointed to the service of French instrumented aircraft for environmental research (Safire).
