Greenhouse gas emissions (including CO2): France on the right trajectory for 2032, but the biggest reduction is yet to come

Greenhouse gas emissions: France on the right path

The Interprofessional Technical Center for the Study of Atmospheric Pollution (CITEPA) publishes an estimate of France’s greenhouse gas emissions for 2021. According to this estimate, French emissions in 2021 are 418 Mt CO2e (excluding the land sector and forests). These results correspond to the trajectory provided for by the National Low-Carbon Strategy. CITEPA also publishes consolidated emissions figures for 2020.

Greenhouse gases: what gas are we talking about?

If the media focuses only on CO2, this gas is obviously not the most harmful. It can be integrated easily by nature. As a reminder, companies produce CO2 for greenhouse crops all year round in order to increase production. It is therefore important not to confuse everything.

  • Greenhouse gases: CO2, CH4, N2O, HFCs, PFCs, SF6, NF3, total CO2e.
  • Atmospheric pollutants: Acidifiers, eutrophicants and photochemical pollutants (SO2, NOx, NH3, VOCNM, CO; total in acid equivalent); Heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, ni, Pb, Se, Zn); Persistent organic pollutants (PCDD-F, PAH, PCB, HCB), Particles (PM10, PM2.5, PM1.0; total (TSP), soot carbon component).

According to the results published by CITEPA for the year 2021, the level of greenhouse gas emissions (418 Mt CO2e) respects the trajectory set by the National Low-Carbon Strategy (422 Mt CO2e). Thus, compared to the year 2019 (before confinement), emissions in 2021 are down by 3.8% (i.e. -16 Mt CO2e, excluding the land and forest sector). Since 2017, the decline has reached 9.6%. These results prove the effectiveness of French and European systems in transforming the way we produce, travel and consume, and thus reduce greenhouse gas emissions. While a first step has been taken, efforts must be accelerated in the years to come in order to double the rate of reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in the next five years.
