“The temperatures above 35° today caused the appearance of fumaroles and fire outbreaks in the burnt area which were consumed by the 1,200 firefighters and the air resources still mobilized on the ground”, had detailed a press release from Fabienne Buccio, prefect of Gironde, this Sunday.

“These phenomena should decrease tomorrow with the announced drop in temperatures”, adds the prefecture.

In Landiras, no new authorization could be granted this Sunday, July 24 to allow the evacuees to return to their homes. The authorities are continuing to study the situation sector by sector.

The fire in La Teste-de-Buch fixed

Since Saturday July 23, the fire in La Teste-de-Buch has been considered by the authorities to be “fixed”, unlike that of Landiras, which remains “contained”. These two fires burned nearly 21,000 hectares of forest, about twice the area of intramural Paris.

They did not cause any human casualties, but forced more than 36,000 people to leave their accommodation, including 6,000 holidaymakers evacuated from the five campsites on the Dune du Pilat which were then destroyed by the flames.

However, the prefecture specifies that “the D259 remains closed between the roundabouts of Miquelots and the dune, as does the D218 road between the roundabout of the dune of Pilat and Biscarosse, and track 214. The dune of Pilat also remains unreachable.”
