Air Breizh published its observations of the air quality on the metropolis of reindeer for this Wednesday, June 15, 2022.

What is Air Breizh?

It is an association approved by the Ministry for the Environment for monitoring air quality in Brittany. Air Breizh is one of the 19 air quality monitoring associations in France.

A new time, the air is bad because of a significant concentration of ozone.

How are the indices calculated?

The air quality indices are calculated “by aggregating data of measured and modeled concentrations of five air pollutants » according to Air Breizh.

PM10: fine particles with a diameter of less than 10 µm, PM2.5 those less than 2.5 µm.
PM2.5: very fine particles with a diameter of less than 2.5 µm (the finer the particles, the more toxic they are).
O3: ozone.
NO2: nitrogen dioxide.
SO2 : sulfur dioxide.

In the troposphere (0 to 10 km altitude), where we breathe, ozone measured by Air Breizh is a secondary pollutant, i.e. it is not released directly into the atmosphere, but is is formed by photochemical reaction, in the presence of UV rays from the sun and from precursors (NOx, VOC, etc.) of automotive and industrial origin.

The the reaction mechanisms are complex and the highest ozone concentrations are usually measured in spring and summer when sunshine is important.

Health risks

able to penetrate developed in the lungsozone causes in high concentration inflammation and hyper-reactivity of the bronchi. Of the nose and throat irritation generally accompanied, accompanied by a difficulty breathing. Of the eye irritation are also visible.

The serious consequences on the environment

Ozone has adverse effects on vegetation and disrupts the growth of some species (lower yields, leaf necrosis, etc.). He contributes to the greenhouse effect. He attacks and degrades certain materials: rubber for example.

What recommendations?

Faced with the degradation of the air in the Rennes region, some precautions can be taken by the people and particularly for vulnerable or sensitive people :

  • In case of respiratory or cardiac geneseek advice from a healthcare professional.
  • Take advice from your doctor to find out if your medical treatment needs to be adapted.
  • Prioritize shorter outings and those who ask less effort.
  • Avoid outings in the afternoonwhen the sunshine is maximum.
  • Avoid strenuous physical activities and sports (including competitions) outside ; those of low intensity, indoors, can be maintained.

Air Breizh specifies that it is necessary to maintain the usual practices of ventilation and ventilation (the situation, during a pollution episode, does not justify containment measures) and not to aggravate the effects of this pollution by exposing oneself to additional irritating factors: tobacco smoke, use of solvents indoors, wood heating, exposure to pollen in season, etc.
